Worship, the foundation of our fellowship, is a special time of reverence, prayer, music, reflection and inspiration. Believing that worship is both a corporate and participatory experience, services are planned and led by both laity and our ministerial staff. Old and New Testament texts are selected from the Common Lectionary which parallels the church year from Advent through Pentecost.
Our music program offers opportunities for adults and children to lead in worship, develop musical skills, and have fun! Our eclectic musical style ranges from classical: Schubert's "Mass in G"; to casual: contemporary songs with guitar; to meditational: ancient Taize choruses; to traditional: familiar gospel hymns. Offering our gifts and talents to the best of our abilities to the glory of God are: • Adult Choir • Handbell Choir • Elementary Children's Choir (Grades 1-5) • Preschool Choir (4s and 5s) • Adult and children soloists are featured regularly
ADULT Through both topical and conventional curriculum, adults gather Sunday mornings to explore Biblical truths and their applications for our lives. Literature ranges from quarterly studies by publishers Smyth and Helwys, Abingdon Press and Upper Room to contemporary authors/theologians including C.S. Lewis, J.B. Phillips and Richard Foster. Periodic topical Bible studies and book clubs offer additional faith development opportunities.
With some 30 teens and pre-teens grades 6-12, the Youth Group at Providence “is all that and a bag of chips!” so says 15 year-old Alison, a sophomore at Wando High School. Through weekly Bible studies, retreats, summer camp, ski trips, frequent fellowship opportunities (bowling, movies, sports, hangin’ out) and missions projects, the Youth Group is an active, integral part of life at Providence.
Our children are nurtured and educated in a loving, inspiring environment. With programs for infants through elementary aged kids, our educational curriculum features age-specific Bible stories, crafts and activities year ‘round and Vacation Bible School each summer. Pre- and grade-schoolers participate in worship each Sunday through our Children’s Sermon prior to Extended Session (activities for pre-schoolers) or Children’s Church (a special worship service for K–1st graders). Our children are also engaged in missions education, choir and worship as ushers and acolytes.
Just about any day of any week, someone, somewhere from Providence is serving through missions. Whether it’s “Second Saturday” (a monthly hands-on project in our community), providing food to the residents of Ronald McDonald House, serving a meal at Crisis Ministries, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity or tutoring students at Cainhoy Elementary School, missions opportunities truly do abound at Providence. Time, talent and financial resources have been committed to missions since our inception. Each year we allocate resources to support local, regional and global missions. Church members tutor children in reading at Cainhoy Elementary School each Wednesday morning. Contact Corlys Devenny for more details. We have two Adopt-A-People partnership groups here at Providence. An Adopt-A-People partnership is a CBF hands-on initiative that connect churches with field personnel and the unevangelized groups they live and work among. Our two groups here are the Balinese from the Island of Bali in Indonesia and the Pattani Malay from Thailand. The Balinese: Ways to be involved are to pray for the Balinese, contribute financially through support of our HOPE Project (Children’s education fund), support the CBF Global Missions Offering and participate in a short-term missions trip. The Pattani Malay: Ways to be involved include praying for the Pattani, contribute financially to their Brick Project (making brick to build with), contribute to their Education Fund for children, and participate in a short-term mission trip. Metanoia Young Leaders Program (MYLP) is an afterschool program for 1-4 grade children in North Charleston run by Evelyn Oliveira and Bill Stanfield, our SCCBF Urban Ministers. MYLP is looking for mentors to work one-on-0ne with a child, for 4 hours per month, preferably an hour each week. They could also use children’s books for their library. Metanoia 529-3014. OUTREACH Ministering to and among new friends is the goal of our Outreach efforts. From welcoming first time and returning visitors to new member orientation, we’d like the newest among us to especially feel at home. That’s why twice each year (Spring and Fall) we offer PBC 101, a 5-week, 5-hour orientation class to study and discuss Providence’s history, identity and ministries. Topics include: • History of Providence • Our Vision, Covenant and Long Range Plans • Church Constitution and Organization • Our affiliation with Cooperative Baptist Fellowship • Our Confession of Faith • Meet the Staff
Taking care and keeping up with each other is the primary role of our Fellowship Committee. In addition to providing food, drink and coordination for many church functions, the Fellowship Committee oversees some 9 geographically-based Care Groups composed of 5-6 families per group who minister to each other by assisting in times of need (illness, birth or death of a family member). Church-wide events coordinated by the Committee are: • Wednesday night suppers • Salt Shakers (quarterly dinner fellowships) • Annual Fall Fest variety show • Thanksgiving and Easter dinners • Christmas caroling dessert • Easter Egg Hunt • PBC Cookbook |
